Kennett school directors approve resignations, new hires and more

Kennett Consolidated School Directors approved the following:


Rachel Bowers, special education teacher at Kennett Middle, effective June 14, 2017.

Kimberly Guarneri, math teacher at Kennett High, effective Aug. 1, 2017.

Request for leave

Cassandra Allen, guidance counselor at Kennett High, child-rearing leave beginning Aug. 21, 2017 and continuing through Nov. 30, 2017.



Instructional staff -- Dan Garcia, FLES, New Garden, Greenwood and Mary D. Lang Kindergarten Center, beginning May 10. Garcia went to the University of Delaware and is certified in Spanish, and has a Masters, Step 1, from Immaculata University.

Creation of position

The board approved the creation of a 12-month full-time administrative position of Director of Curriculum and Math and Science Instruction.

Substitute Staff Placement

The board approved the Substitute Staff Placement Agreement with S4Teachers, effective July 1, 2017. For the past two years, S4Teachers has provided the district daily substitute teachers and non-certified staff members with an 88 percent fill rate. The current rate for certified staff subs is $100 per day, and $120 per day for daily report substitutes.

Student Transportation Agreement

The board approved the Transportation Agreement between Kennett Consolidated School District and the Licensed Child Care Centers for the 2017-18 school year. The district will provide extended bus transportation service to five licensed child care centers, which will allow children attending these centers to be transported to their residential elementary school even through the child care center is located outside the attendance area. The licensed child care centers will reimburse the district for the actual cost of the extended bus service.

Agreement with YMCA

The board approved an agreement of services between Kennett Consolidated School District and the YMCA of Greater Brandywine from June 1, 2017 to June 20, 2022. For years, the school district and the YMCA has partnered to maximize the efficient use of their respective facilities. The dist4rict utilizes the Kennett Area YMCA’s swimming pool for swim team practices and meets and uses the parking lot north of the high school campus for student parking during the school year. The Kennett YMCA uses classrooms and gym space in the district’s elementary schools to provide before- and after-school child care programs.


The school directors adopted the final budget for the 2107-18 fiscal year in the amount of $84.2 million, which requires a real estate levy of 29.87 mills. A 1 percent earned income tax will be levied on salaries and wages and a tax of ½ or 1 percent will be levied on real estate transfers for the fiscal year 2017-18.
